Meet me at the
What is the Swap-O-Rama-Rama, you ask? “The Swap-O-Rama-Rama is the world’s largest clothing swap! Join in the communal process of reuse and celebrate our collective creativity. Swap-O-Rama-Rama is a giant clothing swap and series of do-it-yourself workshops in which a community explores reuse and creativity through the recycling of used clothing. At SORR, consumers are taught to be creators.”
For five years now, I have taught various “Re-Make-Fashion” workshops, such as last year’s “Slash Revival“. This year, I have been promoted to “Sewing Guru” status and will be helping you create your visions, one-on-one, in the Swap-O-Rama-Rama Sewing Lounge. We have around 15 machines for you to work on. It is timed, and there is sometimes a short line, so you’ll need your project ready-to-sew before heading to the machines. And by the time you leave it will be ready-to-wear! But fyi, it’s not required that you make anything. It might just be the perfect opportunity to get a feel for machine-sewing. I’ll show you how it’s set up- threaded and some simple stitches. Where you go with this skill is up to you but if you want, soon you’ll be repairing or even re-making your own clothing which could save not only your money but precious natural resources-a-plenty. If you’re not quite sure what you would like to make, no worries. There are loads of Up-cycle workshops to get inspiration from. We’d love to give you some ideas and of course you are free to come with your own. And Don’t forget some clothing-swap donations if you have them. We love clothing donations! If you can’t get them to us. . .whatever you do, don’t throw ‘em in the dump! You could have your own swap/party with friends. You could also take it to a second-hand shop, if it’s still wearable. Or, a clothing recycling bin. They are out there! For my own purposes, a stained shirt, blown out pair of pants, or even mis-matched socks with holes could have another use besides land-fill space…which is absolutly a non-use! On the contrary, those destroyed garments could be transformed into a rug, if not a couture dress~ and hey, maybe even Gucci would want them? Pre-Destroyed is still ‘in’, no?
